SCAVENGE SPACE INSPECTION

Scavenge inspection is inspection of piston, piston rings, cylinder liners etc. Of the main engine through scavenge ports. This helps for detecting leakage from the piston and cylinder cover, if any finish jacket cooling water and lubricating oil pumps should be running during the scavenge port inspection.
scavenge inspection is carried out partially from under piston area and partly from scavenger receiver.
Preparation

  • Make sure that vessel as necessary permission from port authorities or bridge for main engine immobilization.
  • Engine stop indicator cock opens.
  • Engage turning gear to main engine.
Inspection

  • To inspect the scavenge space, open all under piston scavenge space doors and scavenge air receiver door.

  • Ventilate the space using a portable blower.
  • When the piston is below scavenge ports, inspect the piston crown and cylinder wall.

  • Check for any frictional wear between the sliding surface of cylinder liner and piston.

  • Check for acidic corrosion on the liner surface, Due to the acidic corrosion, the liner wears out in a clover leaf pattern.

  • Check for abrasion on the liner surface form remnants of mechanical wear, corrosion and combustion.

  • Turn the engine, inspect piston rings and piston skirt through the scavenge ports.

  • Check for micro seizures on the pistons rings and liner surface.

  • Check the free movement of piston ring springiness by pressing the rings.

  • Turn the engine to inspect the piston rod.
