Faults you will find in marine purifiers and know how to rectify them

The following fault are mostly occur in the purifiers:

  1. Oil overflow.
  2. Low oil throughput.
  3. Oil loss.
  4. Heavy vibration.
  5. No desludging.
  6. High back Pressure.
  7. Water contamination.
1. Oil Overflow:
  • If the oil overflows from the water side it indicates that the water seal is broken. The reason could be very high oil inlet temperature.
Inspect the temperature controller and the steam inlet valve of the heater. Rectify the defect in the heating system.

  • Improper selection of gravity discs will shift the oil water interface towards the periphery resulting in oil flow to the water side.
          Select the correct gravity disc.

  • Oil overflow can also be due to low speed of the bowl.
Inspect the friction pads and replace if necessary.

Reasons remedies
High oil inlet temperature. Rectify the defects in the heating system.
Improper selection of gravity discs. Select the correct gravity disc.
Low speed of the bowl. Impact the friction pads and replace.

2. Low oil throughput :
  • If the oil throughput is less it may be due to the malfunctioning of the feed pump relief valve.
Overhaul and adjust the relief valve.
  • Choked filter in the feed line may also lead to reduction of oil throughput.
Inspect and clean the filter.
  • Clogged pipeline can aslo be a reason for a low oil throughput.
Clean the pipeline.

Reasons remedies
Malfunctioning of the feed pumps relief valve. Overhaul and adjust the relief valve.
Choked filter in the feed line. Inspect and clean the filter.
Clogged pipe line. Clean the pipeline.

3. Oil loss :

If the operating water pressure decreases, the bowl will not close properly and oil will leak to the sludge side.

  • The operating water pressure will reduce if the water line filter is clogged.
Clean the water line filter.
  • The chocked pairing disc will reduce the operating water pressure.
Inspect and clean the pairing disc.
  • The operating water can leak through the worn out O rings and the bowl will open allowing the oil to sludge side.
Inspect and replace the O rings.

Reasons remedies
Clogged water line filter. Inspect and clean the water line filters.
Choked pairing disc. Inspect and clean the water line filters.
Worn out O rings of pairing disc. Replace the O rings of pairing disc.

4. Heavy vibration :

  • Heavy vibration may be due to the accumulation of sludge and bowl imbalance.
Inspect and clean the bowl. Inspect the shock vibration mounting.

Reasons remedies
Bowl imbalance due to accumulation of sludge. Inspect and clean the bowl.
Worn out shock vibration mountings. Renew the shock vibration mountings.

5. No desludging :

  • Desludging water may not flow due to the faulty operation of solenoid.
Inspect and replace the solenoid.

Reasons remedies
Faulty operation of solenoid. Inspect and replace the solenoid.
Choked water line filter. Clean the filter.

6. High back pressure :
  • The rise in back pressure may be due to the construction in the purifier outlet piping.
  • High throughput or low inlet temperature.
Inspect and take corrective action.

Reasons remedies
Constriction in the purifier outlet piping. Clean the pipe line.
High throughput. Adjust the throughput.
Low inlet temperature. Adjust the inlet temperature.

7. Water contamination :
  • Improper selection of gravity disc will shift the oil water interface towards the centre resulting in water flowing through the oil slide.
Select the correct gravity disc.

Reasons remedies
Improper selection of gravity disc. Select the correct gravity disc.
