Main engine starting problems on ship



Engine fails to turn:

Reasons:

  • Pressure in starting air receiver too low.
  • Any valve shut in the starting air system Starting air distributor malfunctioning.
  • Turning gear engaged.
  • Interlock switch of turning gear defective.
  • Starting air valves in Cylinder covers defective.

Remedies:

  • Check the functioning of compressors.
  • Check and open the valve.
  • Identify and rectify the fault.
  • Disengage the turning gear.
  • Replace the interlock switch.
  • Pressure test the valves.
  • Replace or overhaul defective valves.


Engine does not reverse:

Reasons:

  • The control air signal, for reversing has not reached the engine.

Remedies:

  • Find the defective valve or component which blocks the signal.
  • Repair or replace the valve.

Engine stops:

Reasons:

  • Engine automatically shuts down.
  • Manoeuvring gear is sluggish.
  • Fault in governor.

Remedies:

  • Check the parameters and identify the reason for the shutdown. Reset shut down.
  • Lubricate the manoeuvring gear. Ensure that fuel pumps, rod connections and bearings are movable.
  • Identify and rectify the fault.


Engine runs unevenly:

Reasons:

  • Auxiliary blowers not functioning
  • Fuel filter clogged
  • Fuel pressure too low
  • One or more cylinders not firing

Remedies:

  • Start auxiliary blowers.
  • Clean the filter.
  • Increase the pressure.
  • Check the fuel pump and fuel injectors.
